Zaporozhye info
Zaporizhzhya, also Zaporozh'ye, city, southeastern Ukraine, capital of Zaporizhzhya Oblast, on the Dnieper River. Currently the city is the sixth largest one in Ukraine and has population of 776,000 people (as of 2011).
An important rail junction and transshipment port for goods produced in the Donets Basin, Zaporizhzhya is a major industrial city. Products include aluminum, processed magnesium, iron and steel, motor vehicles, aircraft engine, chemicals, and agricultural machinery. The port of Zaporizhia is an important place of transshipment for goods from the Donbass.
The city, founded in 1770 as a fortress to protect the southern territories from Turkish threats, was known as Aleksandrovsk until 1921. Nearby, in the Dnieper River, is Khortitsa Island, the site of an autonomous Zaporizhzhya Cossack stronghold (Zaporizhian Sich) from the 16th to the 18th century.
Zaporozhye started to turn into the industrial center in 1930s, when hydroelectric power station (DniproHES) and giant steel ("Zaporozhstal'") and aluminum plants ("DAZ"- Dnieper Aluminium Plant) were planned to build. Now they are largest Ukrainian steel and aluminum makers. The construction of DniproHES became the turning point in the city history. Between the hydroelectric dam and industrial area in 10 km from the center of the old Alexandrovsk was established residential district # 6, which was named "Sotsgorod" (Socialist city). This was the Soviet implementation of the city of the future, the city-garden and a part of the global project called Big Zaporozhie. Families of the Soviet and American engineers, advisers and industry bosses lived in Sotsgorod at that time. During WWII and German occupation of Zaporozhye, most of the city as well as the industrial objects were destroyed. The dam of DneproGES was exploded because of the threat that German troops would enter the city. About 44,000 citizens and captives died during the occupation of the city. The city reconstruction and growth in after war years made the "Sotsgorod" with the old part of Zaporozhye merge.
The city main attraction and its pride is Khortytsia island. Once played an important role in Ukrainian history it is now a national cultural reserve. The major part of the sanctuary covers the Zaporizhian Cossack Museum. The museum is the reconstructed stronghold of the Zaporozhian Cossacs. All features of the military cossack's camp life and their lifestyle are presented in the museum. The engineering and cultural sights of the city are two double-decked concrete bridges over the Dnepr, which connect the right and left banks of Zaporozhye through the Khortytsia Island. The other engineering sight of Zaporozhye is the longest Ukrainian Sunset in Zaporozhye children railway. Its extent is 9,4 km. Zaporozhye main street – Lenin Avenue – is one of the longest streets in Ukraine and Europe. Its length is 10,8 km. Museum of the weapon history, Zaporozhye Regional Art Museum, Zaporizhia Regional Museum play an important role in the city cultural life.
