Yevpatoria is a Crimean resort town, famous for its shallow sandy, healthy microclimate and long swimming season, which made the town a desirable children's resort.
Yevpatoria is a city more than 2500 years old. It had several different names during it's history: Kirkinitida, Gizlyar(Gezlev, Kozlov), and Evpatoria(Eupatoria, Yevpatoriya). It was founded as a Greek settlement, for some period administrated by the Ottoman Empire and later used as a center of slave-trade for the Crimean Khanate and finally in 1783 was captured by the Russian with the whole Crimea.
Today Yevpatoriya is a major Ukrainian Black Sea port, a rail hub, and resort town. The main industries include fishing, food processing, wine making, limestone quarrying, weaving, and the manufacture of building materials, machinery, furniture manufacturing and tourism. The population of Yevpatoriya is about 100 thousand citizens.
Yevpatoriya has spas of mineral water, salt and mud lakes. These resorts belong to a vast area with curative facilities where the main health-improving factors are the sunshine and sea, air and sand, brine and mud of the salt lakes, as well as the mineral water of the hot springs. Yevpatoriya has a rail connection with Kiev and Moscow in winter and additionally with Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk, Minks and other cities during the summer season.
The city's unique atmosphere is created by the remains of Greek fortifications, Moslem cloisters of the Crimean Tatar and Turkish culture. The cult architecture of the town is diverse as Yevpatoria temples had been erected at the expense of numerous communities professing various religions (Armenian, Moslem, Karaite)
Famous attractions within or near Yevpatoria are: Karaite Kenasa, Juma-Jami Mosque, Karaite Kenassa, St. Nicholas' the Miracle Worker CathedraL, Dervishes Tekje.
Karaite Kenasa is the church, or even a huge temple complex of the Karaims (Karaites), most numerous community in Yevpatoria and is a fine example of national architecture. Now it is both the temple and the museum.
Armenian church in Yevpatoria is a beautiful cult building, now an architectural monument, built in 1885 by the town's Armenian community.
One of most famous cultural and architectural sight of Yevpatoria is Juma-Jami Mosque, also known as the Friday Mosque. This Catherdral Moslem temple was built in 1552 by Turkish architect Mimar Sinan. The silhouette of the building reminds one of Istanbul ‘s Ai-Sofia in decreased form.
Dervishes Tekjeis the complex of the 16-18th centuries constructions and is a unique monument of Crimean-Tatar architecture.
