Why Russian women are seeking a partner abroad.
Even though the boost of mass emigration and the development of Russian matchmaking service was in 1990, the modern tendencies show that there is still strong interest of Russian women in the international marriage.
The basis reason is the demographic situation in Russia , Ukraine , Belarus and many post-Soviet countries.
Russia has one of the lowest men to women ratio in the world. According to a recent census, there are approximately 11 million more women than men in Russia.
The reasons attributed to this social imbalance and an undesirable situation is the high rate among mortality due to heart disease and excessive drinking. A demographic crisis is also blamed on the economic turmoil that followed the Soviet collapse, and World War II losses of male population. Whatever the reasons are, the number of Russian women far outnumbers the men and naturally they want to get married, have family and children.
Economical aspect, political instability and poor social policy towards women and children in Russia also affect the decision of a Russian woman to seek a foreign partner.
Rates of domestic violence against women are alarming and sexual harassment in the workplace remains an issue in Russia. There is much to do to promote gender equality in Russia, protect motherhood and childhood, provide access for women to various kinds of work, equal payment and equal work conditions.
The Constitution guarantees the state protection of motherhood, childhood and family, however because of insufficient budget financing and restrictions on work of nongovernmental organizations, legislative declarations remain largely unimplemented. There is much to do to improve medical, social, and legal aspects of the protection of mothers and children
In case of divorce, whose rate is very high in Russia (more then half married end in divorce according to 2010 statistics), a parent that is responsible for minor children custody is usually a divorced mother. In most cases a divorced woman is paid nominal alimony from the ex-husband. She manages several jobs simultaneously and lives with her parents. Neither the system nor society reward single mothers in Russia.
Besides, a traditional model of a Russian family does not leave much space for a woman to peruse her career and personal life. A woman is expected to be an equal bread-winner and make it mainly on her own with the household and children.
The society often supports double standards towards men and women in Russia when it comes to infidelity, which is one of the main reasons for divorces in Russia. A public opinion is quite loyal to a man living in 2 families with different women. This attitude even provided a ground for debate regarding officially allowing polygamy in Russia.
Such situation and tendencies in Russian society make a Russian women seek a more considerate, responsible, helpful partner and seriously consider a possibility of marrying a foreign man and obtain a more legally and socially protected position in a different country.
