Volgograd - City Information

Volgograd info

The city of Volgograd was established more than 400 years ago primarily because of its location at the crossroads of both land- and water- ways. It has experienced three changes in its name during that time-- first it was Tsaritsyn, then it was Stalingrad, and currently it is referred to as Volgograd-- and was the site of one of the most significant & decisive battles of World War II.

Volgograd was founded in 1589 as a wooden fortress on the banks of Tsarina river. The fortress became the part of Volga watch line for protecting of the southern borders of Moscow princedom. The fortress was plundered and destroyed during the global invasion of Crimean and Tatar peoples in the Lower Volga. Tsaritsyn survived the entrance of the troops of Stepan Razin, peasant uprising headed by Kondrati Bulavin and unsuccessfully stormed by Yemelyan Pugachev. The fortress was reconstructed and the city became the provincial and district town. During the Russian civil war Tsaritsyn was under Soviet control. The Battle for Tsaritsyn, a fight between Bolshevik forces and White forces of General Denikin is the most memorable event of that period. Renamed Stalingran in 1925, the city was a rapidly developing center of heavy industry and transshipment by rail and river before WWII. Therefore it was attacked by Axis forces during World War II. In 1942, the city became the site of one of the pivotal battles of the war - the Battle of Stalingrad. In 1961, the name was changed from Stalingrad to Volgograd ("Volga City") as part of Nikita Khrushchev's programme of de-Stalinization.

Modern Volgograd remains an important industrial city. Industries include shipbuilding, oil refining, steel and aluminium production, manufacture of machinery and vehicles, and chemical production. A large Volgograd Hydroelectric Plant stands a short distance to the north of Volgograd. Volgograd is a major railway junction serviced by Pri Volga Railway.

Hero city Volgograd is a centre of Volgograd region with 1,021,200 inhabitants. It is the transport gate of the South Russia - a trans – shipment point for transportation different cargoes from boarding countries.

Since Volgograd was almost completely ruined during WWII, there are not old monuments in the city. The majority of city sights are historical monuments, connected with the World War II. Volgograd is considered as «the main Russian High» - «Mamaev Kurgan», where the central part of exposition is Motherland. It is a panorama of defeat of the fascists armies under Stalingrad. The main famous sight of the city, its symbol is the statue of Motherland, personifying the unity of Russian force.
