Vinnytsya (Ukrainian Vinnytsia), city, west central Ukraine, capital of Vinnytsya Oblast, on the Southern Bug River. Vinnytsia is located about 260 km (160 mi) from the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, 429 km (267 mi) from the port city Odessa, and 369 km (229 mi) from Lviv.
It is an important railroad junction located in an agricultural region. The industries of Vinnytsya include food processing, especially beet sugar refining, and the manufacture of machinery, fertilizer, and clothing. Population (1998 estimate) 389,000.
The community was founded in the 14th century around a Lithuanian fortress. It was taken by Poland in 1569 and was annexed by Russia in 1793. During World War II Vinnytsya was occupied by German forces from 1941 to 1944.
Vinnitsa attractions and historical and architectural sights include: the Transfiguration Cathedral (1758), Mansion-museum of Nikolay Ivanovich Pirogov, famous Russian surgeon and the founder of the field medicine; Vinnytsia's water tower (now the War Veteran's Museum); the remains of Wehrwolf, Eastern Front military headquarters of Adolf Hitler during WWII, Jesuit monastery (1363) and the temple complex errected by the monks starting from the 17th century, now called Vinnitsa Mury.
