Vilnius - City Information
Vilnius info
Vilnius, the largest and most beautiful of Lithuania’s cities, has a population of 600,000 and is the capital of the Republic. It was founded in 1323 at the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers and is surrounded by picturesque wooded hills. The city’s history has been as turbulent as the nation’s. Over the centuries it has been repeatedly plundered during wars and devastated by fires.
Yet it has contrived to retain its unique character as a cultural meeting point of East and West. Old Town, which covers 255 ha, has been designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
