Ufa is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia with the population of 1,062,300 (2010 census). The bulk of the population is composed of Bashkirs, Russians, Tatars, Chuvash and Maris. Ufa believers profess mostly Islam and Christianity.
The city was founded as a fortress in 1574. It acquired the status of a town in 1586 and dynamically developed since then. The discovery of oil in Bashkiriya made Ufa one of the centers of the USSR oil extracting and oil refining industries. During World War II, following eastward Soviet retreat in 1941, Ufa became the wartime seat of the Soviet Ukrainian government.
Ufa is the powerful industrial center of the Republic of Bashkortostan. The enterprises of fuel, chemical, petrochemical, engineering industry of highest world standards make up the basis of capital economics. The fuel industry takes special place in the industrial complex. The engineering complex specializes on the production of labour-intensive compound and precision machinery and high technological equipment.
Ufa is the important transport center connecting the West and the East of Russia. Many main-line trackages like railway lines, river routes, pipelines, motor transport roads, airlines go through Ufa.
Ufa is the famous university and academic center. It is also a cultural capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan. Ufa Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Bashkir State University, numerous scientific institutes, Botanical Gardens, the Museum of Archeology and Ethnography are some of the institutions. The capital also houses six theatres, Bashkir State Philharmonic Society, Bashkir State Puppet Theatre, museums, culture centers and clubs, a circus, ballet and choreography studios, cinemas, a planetarium, two centralized library networks, children's music and arts schools.
Ufa is a home for varous cultural events like the annual Aksakov Poetry Festival, the international festival of Turkic language theatres "Tuganlyk" and the International Glinka Vocal Competition. Bashkortostan is noted for its historical sights and landmarks, such as the Cathedral of the Archangel Michael, St Nicolas Cathedral, an 18-century mosque in the town of Belebei, and the Kapova Cave.
