Stavropol is a city situated in south-west Russia on the northern slope of the Caucasus Mountains between the Black and Caspian Seas. It is the administrative center of Stavropol Krai and has a population of 398,300 people (2010 census).
Stavropol was founded in 1777 following the Russo-Turkish War of 1768–1774 as a military encampment and designated as a city in 1785. Due to the city's strategic location it became a base for the subsequent Russian conquest of the Caucasus. By the early 19th century the city grew into a busy trade center of the Northern Caucasus. After Russian Civil War Stavropol was renamed Voroshilovsk after Soviet military commander Kliment Voroshilov. Later in 1943 it accuired its initial name.
Modern Stavropol is an industrial and agricultural city. An important part of the local economy is the area's natural gas fields which are piped up to Moscow. Rich agricultural region of the surrounding Stavropol Plateau create favorable conditions for developing wool, leather, grain milling, and food-processing industries. Agriculture is one of the most important branches of Stavropol krai economics.
Stavropol has a number of cultural and educational institutions, including Stavropol State University, North-Caucasus State Technical University, Agrarian University and Stavropol State Medical Academy, 2 theaters, a philharmonic hall and a state circus. The Stavropol State Museum of History, Culture, Nature and Landscape Museum-Reserve contain rare exhibits connected with the history of the region, war of the Caucasus and local lore.
Stavropol region is rich in historical landmarks and interesting sights among which is the Central Park of Stavropol, a state protected natural monument, often called a green gem of Stavropol; "Tatarskoye gorodishche" (Tatar settlement), a large archaeological attraction of the Pre-Caucasian region; Suvorov Cross, which had been named after the great Russian commander Alexander Vasiljevich Suvorov; a monument to Suvorov; Tiflissky Gates (Triumphal Arch), a monument to the great patriotic war of 1812; "Krepostnaya Gorka: (Fortified Hill) memorial complex with a fortress wall fragment (1770-1780) that remains in the city center; a mosque; the Apostle Andrew Cathedral Church; the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Cathedral (XIX century); a building of a former Gostiny Dvor (Trade center); an old office building; an old gymnasium (mid-XIX century) and a military hospital complex (1840s) are some of most famous city architectural highlights.
Stavropol region is a popular tourist destination offering both therapeutic and extreme tourism. City-resorts Pyatigorsk, Kislovodsk, Yessentuki and Zheleznovodsk are well-known far beyond Russian borders.
