Saratov is located in the heart of Volga River Valley Region. Once the capital of the Lower-Volga region, it is now the center of one of the biggest provinces in Russia and a major port on the Volga River. Saratov has a population of about 900 000 people. An additional 2 million people live in the surrounding area. In addition to ethnic Russians, the city also has many Tatar, Ukrainian, Jewish, and German residents. Saratov is an important city in the history of the Volga Germans and has a considerable German community.
The city grew from several settlements constructed along the Volga River in order to secure the southeastern boundary of Russian state in the 16th century. By the 1800s, Saratov had grown to be an important shipping port on the Volga. During the World War II, Saratov was a station on the North-South Volzhskaya Rokada, a specially designated military railroad providing troops, ammunition and supplies to Stalingrad. Until the end of the Soviet Union in 1991, Saratov was designated a "closed city", that is, strictly off limits to all foreigners due to its military importance. This was due to the presence of a vital military aircraft manufacturing facility in the city
Modern Saratov is highly industrialized city, due in part to the rich in natural and industrial resources of the area. Saratov region is also one of the more important and largest cultural and scientific centres in Russia. It possesses six institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 21 research institutes, 19 project institutes, as well as the Saratov State University, the Saratov State Socio-Economic University, the Saratov State Technical University, and many scientific and technological laboratories attached to some of the city's large industrial enterprises.
Saratov is served by Saratov Tsentralny Airport, and also hosts the general aviation airfield Saratov West. The aerospace manufacturing industry is served by the Saratov South airport.
One of the city's most prominent landmarks is the 19th century neo-Gothic Conservatory. Other cultural institutions include the Saratov Dramatic Theater, Fedin State Museum, Radischev Art Museum, Saratov Operetta House and the Opera and Ballet Theater. Some of the city famous localities are Muzeynaya Square with wonderful memorials such as Troitsky (Trinity) Cathedral, built in the XIX century and Balneal Clinic which is analogous to the well-known Matsesta.
