Samara, called Kuybyshev from 1935 to 1990, is the sixth largest city in Russia. It is situated in the southeastern part of European Russia at the confluence of the Volga and Samara Rivers. Samara is also the administrative center of Samara Oblast. The city population is 1,164,900 (2010 Census).
Samara was founded in 1586 as a small fortress to protect the eastern borders of Russian state from nomads. After building the quay Samara settlement became the economic and diplomatic center of Russia. In 1780 Samara city became the capital of Simbirsk Region. The economy of Samara was growing quickly at the end of 19th and beginning of 20th centuries. In 1935 Samara city was renamed by Soviet power after Valerian Kuybyshev (Bolshevik leader). During World War II Kuybyshev city was chosen to be USSR capital in case of Moscow fall. Special shelter was built for USSR leader Stalin. Today it is known as Stalin's Bunker and is open for visitors. Due to the rapid development of defense industry after the World War II Kuybyshev city became so called 'closed city' of USSR. The historical name was returned to the city in 1991.
Samara is now a large and important social, political, economic, industrial and cultural center of European Russia. Samara is known for the production of aerospace launch vehicles, satellites and various space services, engines and cables, aircraft and rolled aluminum, block-module power stations; refining, chemical and cryogenic products; gas-pumping units; bearings of different sizes, drilling bits; automated electrical equipment; airfield equipment; truck-mounted cranes; construction materials; chocolates made by the Russia Chocolate Factory; Rodnik vodka; Zhiguli beer; food processing and light industrial products
Samara is a major transport hub. Kurumoch International Airport handles flights throughout Russia, Central Asia and to Frankfurt, Prague and Dubai. Samara railway station has rail links to Moscow and other major Russian cities. The new, unusual-looking railway station building was completed in 2008. The city is also a major river port.
Samara is a city of dramatic history and many interesting sights, mainly connected with WWII history. Stalin's Bunker is probably Samara's greatest tourist attraction. When the German's had almost reached Moscow in 1941 Samara was chosen as a 'reserve' capital, mainly for its advantageous geographical location. While many of the top Kremlin officials were relocating to Samara work had begun on accommodation for Stalin. These days the bunker is a museum. Another interesting sight connected with WWII history is the War History Museum. Ploshchad Slavy (The Glory square) is Samara's requisite war memorial square and the spot where you will get the best possible views of the Volga. The dominant feature in the square is the Monument of Glory, built in honor of Samara's aviation workers during the Second World Waro. This monument is often referred to as a 'symbol of Samara'. The interetsing feature of Samara architecture and landscape is charming old wooden houses and large, serene parks abound in the center. The city boasts a number of beautiful churches and cathedrals among which is Cathedral of St George, built in 2001; the Iversky Women's Monastery ensemble, founded in 1850; The Pokrovsky Cathedral; beautiful building of Samara Drama Theatre, Ploshchad Chapaeva with the monument to Chapaev in the center. The biggest attraction for tourists is probably the beach along the banks of the Volga.
