St. Petersburg info
St. Petersburg is an exciting city, which has to offer more than simply the Hermitage Museum and the Kirov Ballet of the Mariinsky Theater. The Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Officially proclaimed the "Cultural Capital of Russia" St. Petersburg is a place, where you need weeks just to see all its major landmarks.
St. Petersburg, Russia is a relatively new city, founded in 1703. When it was nine years old it became the capital of Russia and retained this status till 1918. Even now it is referred to as the "Northern capital" of Russia. Over almost 300 years of its history St. Petersburg accumulated all the grandeur of the Russian Imperial Court and became one of the largest centers of culture, science and industry. Created by Peter the Great as a sea port on the Baltic it was essentially "a window to Europe" for Russia, combining the best of the West and the East.
The most European and certainly the most beautiful city of Russia, St. Petersburg is famous for its magnificent architectural ensembles of the of the 18th and 19th centuries. Prominent European and Russian architects worked here.
As of 1993 the territory of the city is 606 square kilometers, and 1 439 square kilometers with the suburbs. The length of the city from North to South is 44 kilometers, and 25 kilometers from West to East.
According to the last census that took place in 1997, there are 4 780 000 people in St.Petersburg. It makes St. Petersburg Russia's second largest city after Moscow.
St. Petersburg has rich in events and glorious history. St. Petersburg Senate Square witnessed the suppressed Decembrist revolt against Nicholas I in 1825. Revolution of 1905 began in Saint Petersburg and it was also the center of February Revolution 1917. Petrograd (the then name of St. Petersburg) was called the cradle of October Revolution for years as it had been prepared and broke out in St. Petersburg in November 7–8, 1917. After that the city acquired a new descriptive name, "the city of three revolutions" which recalls the fact that all these three major developments in the political history of Russia of the early 20th century occurred here. St. Petersburg also survived 872 days siege during World War II. This was one of the longest, most destructive, and most lethal sieges of major cities in modern history. It isolated the city from most supplies except those provided through the Road of Life across Lake Ladoga, and more than a million civilians died, mainly from starvation. Many others were eventually evacuated or escaped by themselves, so the city became largely depopulated.
The city was renamed several times. After the Lenin death in 1924 it was named Leningrad and in 1991 after a referendum, the city of Leningrad was renamed back to Saint Petersburg.
Saint Petersburg has significant historical and cultural heritage and is thus a highly-attractive tourist destination The city has 221 museums, 2000 libraries, more than 80 theaters, 100 concert organizations, 45 galleries and exhibition halls, 62 cinemas, and around 80 other cultural establishments. The city is often called the Venice of the North because there are 65 rivers and canals with artistically decorated cast iron bridges. One of the most beautiful is the Anichkov Bridge. Citizens and tourists enjoy visiting the suburbs of St Petersburg: Petergof, Pushkin, Pavlovsk with their wonderful palaces, parks and fountains. St. Petersburg inspired many of our great poets, writers, painters, sculptors, composers and actors. Much of the life and work of Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Tchaikovsky, Repin and Kramskoi was connected with the city.More about St. Peterbsurg at Wikipedia
