Penza is a city and the administrative center of Penza Oblast, Russia, south-east of Moscow with a population of 517,100 (2010 census) There are many ethnic groups, nationalities and immigrants that live in the Penza Region; among them are representatives of Slavic, Finno-Ugric and Turkish people.

In the middle of the 17th century Russian discoverers of unknown lands approached the river Penza where it runs into the river Sura. Here by a decree from Tzar Aleksey Mikhailovich the town of Penza was founded in 1663 as a frontier outpost on the then southeastern border of Russia.

At present Penzenskaya oblast is an industrial and agricultural region of Russia.] Industry is the leading branch of economics presented by following branches: power engineering, fuel, ferrous metallurgy, chemical and oil chemical, machine building and metal working, timber, wood processing, paper and pulp, construction materials, glass, porcelain and faience, light, food, flour-grinding and cereals, mixed fodder. Favorable combination of natural conditions for farming make agriculture one of the leading among branches of material production. Close to large industrial centers and convenient transportation and geographical location of the region makes commericial cooperation with other regions posssible.

Penza is connected with the name of great Russian poet Michael Lermontov, who spent half of his life there. Lermontov State museum "Tarkhany" is one of the main places of interest of Penza oblast. Other hightlights of this area include Zolotaryovskoye site of ancient settlement of 3rd-4th centuries, reserve "Privolzhskaya forest steppe", Trinity-Skanov monastery, V.G.Belinsky central recreation park, Morozovsky arboretum.
