Novosibirsk is one of the biggest cities in Russia and considered the third largest city after Moscow and St.Petersburg and the biggest one behind the Ural. The population of Novosibirsk is of 1,473,700 (2010 census). It's situated right in the middle of Russia. The City lies on bouth banks of the Ob river, has a river port, the biggest Siberian up-to-date airport Tolmachevo and railway station.

The city was founded in 1893 at the future site of a Trans-Siberian Railway bridge crossing the great Siberian river of Ob. It was named Novonikolayevsk, in honor of both Saint Nicholas and the reigning tsar, Nicholas II. The bridge was completed in the spring of 1897, making the new settlement the regional transport hub. The importance of the city further increased with the completion of the Turkestan-Siberia Railway in the early 20th century. The new railway connected Novosibirsk to Central Asia and the Caspian Sea. It was given its new name, Novosibirsk (New Siberian City) in 1926 following its reconstruction.

During Stalin's industrialization push, Novosibirsk secured its place as one of the largest industrial centers of Siberia. Several massive industrial facilities were created in the city. Rapid growth and industrialization were the reasons behind Novosibirsk's nickname: the "Chicago of Siberia". The rapid growth of the city prompted the construction of a hydroelectric power station. In the 1950s, the Soviet Government directed that a center for scientific research be built in Novosibirsk; consequently, the multi-facility scientific research complex of Akademgorodok was constructed about 30 kilometers (19 mi) south of the city center in 1957. It is now an administrative part of Novosibirsk.

Modern Novosibirsk is the industrial complex consists of 214 large and average industrial enterprises. These produce more than two thirds of all industrial output of the Novosibirsk region. Leading industries are the electric power industry, gas supply, water supply, metallurgy, metal working, and mechanical engineering. Akademgorodok remains a powerful scientific complex with Science Park currently being built in it for commercialization of technologies generated by local research institutions.

Novosibirsk is also an important cultural center of Russia. It has the biggest library in Siberia, and the biggest opera/ballet theater in all of Russia, even bigger than Moscow's Bolshoy. The Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra is well-known outside Siberia and Russia and is among the best orchestras of Russia. Novosibirsk art gallery features over 500 Russian icons spanning four centuries, Russian art from the 18th to 20th centuries and a small foreign art collection. One of the city most memorable sights is red-brick Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky (1897), the finest existing example of pure Russian Orthodox architecture and one of the first stone-buildings of the city.
