Mykolayiv, also Nikolaev, city, capital of Mykolayiv Oblast, southern Ukraine, at the confluence of the Southern Bug and Ingul rivers. A leading port on the Black Sea and an important shipbuilding center, the city has an excellent harbor kept open in winter by icebreakers. Manufactures include agricultural and construction machinery. The city population is 505,900 thousand people.

The town was founded in 1789 by the Russian Governor General of Novorossiya, Prince Grigori Potemkin, initially as a shipyard called simply a New Shipyard on the Ingul river. Kniaz Potemkin signed an order to construct a shipyard on August 27, 1789, which is considered to be the city's birth date. The shipyard was to undertake the repair of naval ships in the Russo-Turkish War (1787–1792). Later Potemkin ordered the shipyard to be named Nikolaev to commemorate the date when Ochakov fell to the Russian troops under his command on December 6, 1788, close to the day of Saint Nicholas (Nikolay) December 19, in the Russian Orthodox Church calendar.

After October revolution 1917 the Soviet power took control in Nikolaev. During World War II Nikolaev was occupied by the Nazis for almost three years. Underground diversion and strike groups heroically resisted the enemy.

The names of many outstanding people are connected with Nikolaev. They are: admirals A. Greig and M. Lazarev, the Antarctic discoverer F. Belinsgauzen and the creator of the battle fleet tactics admiral G. Butakov, the heroes of the Sevastopol defense during the Crimean War admirals P. Nakhimov and V. Kornilov. An outstanding astronomer, academician F. Bredikhin, an Arctic explorer G. Brusilov, a famous scientist academician V. Obraztsov, a polar explorer and inventor S. Makarov come from Nikolaev, famous journalist, playwright, and short story writer Isaac Babel spent most of his youth in Nikolaev. The names of city streets, squares monuments commemorate the city heroic history and names of its famous citizens.

Nikolaev city architecture features are various cathedrals and churches, Black Sea fleet Observatory, Yacht-Club, Vladimir Shuhov hyperboloid water tower and plenty of others. The city museums include Museum of ship-building and fleet, Museum of underground partisan movement during World War II and others.

Nikolaev has a developed transport infrastructure including aviation, train and bus systems. Nikolaev Airport, one of the largest and technically well-equipped airports in the South of Ukraine.
