Moscow is the capital of Russia, centre of the Moscow region. Moscow is one of the world biggest megapolis with the population of over 11 thousand people. Moscow is the seat of Russia's government, one of the world's most expensive cities and the international business center.
Moscow is situated on the Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia. In the course of its history the city has served as the capital of a progression of states, from the medieval Grand Duchy of Moscow and the subsequent Tsardom of Russia to the Soviet Union.
The city is served by an extensive transit network, which includes four international airports, nine railroad terminals, and the Moscow Metro, second only to Tokyo in terms of ridership and recognised as one of the city's landmarks due to the rich and varied architecture of its 182 stations.
Moscow is a highly developed economic, historical and cultural centre of the country. Moscow is Russia's capital of Orthodox Christianity. The Patriarch of Moscow serves as the head of the church and resides in the Danilov Monastery. Moscow was called the "city of 1600 churches prior to 1917. However the city modernization during the Soviet period was carried out at the expense of a great number of historical buildings. The Soviet period, however contributed to Moscow architecture with such famous andmarkes as Lenin's Mausoleum, group of Moscow skyscrapers called Seven Sisters, Ostankino Tower. Along with architecture typical of Tsarist times (Ostankino Palace, Kuskovo, Uzkoye), contemporary high-rise building of trade centers and world-renowned sights like Saint Basils Cathedral, and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior make sometimes chaotic combination of modern Moscow architecture.
Moscow is Russia's cultural capital with the famous Tretyakov Gallery, Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, the State Historical Museum of Russia, Bolshoi Theatre and the Malyi Theatre as well as Vakhtangov Theatre and Moscow Art Theatre, Moscow International House of Music and Moscow State Circus.
Moscow has always been a popular destination for tourists. Some of the better known attractions include the city's UNESCO World Heritage Site, Moscow Kremlin and Red Square, which was built between the 14th and 17th centuries. The Church of the Ascension at Kolomenskoye, which dates from 1532, is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and another popular attraction. Moscow Metro is certainly one of most outstanding city landmarks due to the rich and varied architecture of its 182 stations.
