Mariupol', from 1948 to 1989 called Mariupol', city, southeastern Ukraine, at the mouth of the Kal'mius River on the Sea of Azov. Mariupol' is an important seaport, a railroad terminus, and an industrial center. In the city are steel mills, shipyards, chemical plants, and fish canneries.

Mariupol is the largest city in Priazovye - a geographical region around Azov Sea, divided by Russia and Ukraine - and is also a popular sea resort. The city is located in the Donetsk oblast and historically formed a part of the broader Donbas region. Population (1998 estimate) 500,000. From 1948 to 1989 the city was named Zhdanov in honour of Andrei Zhdanov, a Soviet politician. It is recognised as the centre of Greek culture in Ukraine.

The city was founded as Mariupol' in 1779 by Crimean Greeks. In 1779 it became the first city in the present Donetsk Oblast to receive city status. The railway, a new big port, and a metal works appeared at the end of the 19th century. The city has undergone much industrialisation, such as the appearance of a large "Azovstal" plant. During World War II it was occupied by German forces from 1941 to 1943 and suffered heavy damage.

Mariupol is a popular tourist destination due to the 16 km coastal line with sandy beaches and long swimming season. First resort house was opened here in 1926 and nowadays numerous settlements around the city, like Yur'evka, Urzuf, Melekino and others welcome tourists.
