Kherson, city, southern Ukraine, capital of Khersons'ka Oblast, a major port on the Dnieper River, near the Black Sea. The current estimated population is 329,000 (as of 2007).

Located on the probable site of an ancient Greek colony, Kherson was founded in 1778 by the statesman Grigory Potemkin as a fortress and port. The name Kherson is a contraction of Chersonesos, an ancient Greek colony founded approximately 2500 years ago in the southwestern part of Crimea. In 1783 the first ships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet were launched here.
The city's large railway junction connects Kherson Ukraine with Moscow, Dnepropetrovsk, Kharkov, Simferopol and other cities of the countries and CIS. The closests airports are in Odessa and Nikolaev.
Kherson has many parks and is one of the most "green" cities in Ukraine. Some of them are The Park of Lenin Comsomol, Lenin Park where the Great Oak of more than a hundred years old grows, Park of Glory right above the bank of Dnepr river.
One of the main sights of the city is the Kherson Stronghold erected in 1778. It had the shape of the star and had the complex of the administrative and manufacturing buildings inside. Ekaterina Cathedral, the building of the Admiral Arsenal have remained uo to now. Other interetsing sights of the city onclude Kherson TV Tower — famous construction located in the city and Adziogol Lighthouse.
