Gelendzhik is the third popular resort town with subtropics climate in Krasnodar Krai, Russia after Sochi and Anapa

Gelendzhik is situated on the beautiful Gelendzhik Bay of the Black Sea and is surrounded by the Caucasian mountains

In antiquity, the Gelendzhik Bay was the site of a minor Greek outpost. During the Middle Ages, the bay was commercially important to the Genoese traders, after that it was a part of the Ottoman Empire and in 1829 the coast was secured by Russia by the Treaty of Adrianople.

In 1831, one of the first forts of the Black Sea Coastal Line was set up at Gelendzhik. At the outbreak of the Crimean War the fort had to be blown up and abandoned, but it was resettled by the Cossacks in 1864, at the conclusion of the Russian-Circassian War, and became known as Stanitsa Gelendzhiksaya. The town of Gelendzhik was incorporated in 1915.

The name of the city is derived from gelincik ("little meadow") in Adyghe Language. There are also versions from Arab and Turk languages suggesting the name Gelendzhik means a "poplar" or a "white bride".

During the Soviet period, Gelendzhik was developed as a spa. It possesses sand beaches, three waterparks, two aerial tramway lines that bring visitors to "the Safari park", the recreation area on the Southest slope of the Markotkh mountain Rang and the "Olympus" recreation area , at the top of the Markotkh mountain Range; and two Orthodox churches (from 1909 and 1913, respectively). The annual hydroaviasalon that is held in Gelendzhik since 1996. The coastal village of Arkhipo-Osipovka, administrated from Gelendzhik, contains the terminus of the Blue Stream gas pipeline.

The environs of Gelendzhik are noted for a chain of waterfalls, an outcrop of dolmens - famous for the remains of Caucasian megaliths, appeared about 3 thousand years BC. Dolmen is a rectangular structure made of stone slabs and displaying round access holes cut in their facade. There are also two extremely ancient pine and juniper groves, and the Sail Rock, located 17 km (11 mi) from the downtown core

One can see sea sharks and other underwater inhabitants in Gelendzhik Oceanarium (Sea Aquarium), which is right in the center of the town.

Gelendzhik has an airport with temporary airways terminal which is going to have been replaced by the huge airport complex by 2014 as a part of preparation to Sochi Olimpic Games. The city is crossed by 2 highways: M4 and M27. The closest North Caucasus Railway station is in Novorossiysk ( (31 km to the northwest).

The city population makes 53 thousand people (2010 census).
