Chisinau - City Information

Chisinau info

Chisinau (Kishinev) is Moldavian capital and the largets city (population 664,700 - 2011 est). It is situated in the very core of the country, on the seven hills, and is stretched along the tributary of the Dniester - the Bik. The total area of the city is about 200 square kilometres Chisinau is administratively divided into five districts: Central District, Botanica, Ciocani, Buiucani, Riscani.

The city is situated in the area with the mild, moderate-continental climate, under the Black Sea proximity influence. Chisinau is especially beautiful in Summer: wide avenues with their pomposity and white-stone buildings buried in green foliage.

Founded in 1436 as a monastery village, the city was part of the Principality of Moldavia, which, starting with the 16th century fell under the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire. After the eastern part of Moldavia was ceded to Russian Empire, Chişinău became the capital of the newly annexed gubernia of Bessarabia. The city grew due to the generous development plan and the firts railroad appeared. Following the Russian October Revolution Bessarabia declared independence from Russian empire, before joining the Kingdom of Romania. The city was almost completely destroyed during Second World War. After the war, Bessarabia was fully integrated into the Soviet Union. Most of Bessarabia became the Moldavian SSR with Chişinău as its capital; smaller parts of Bessarabia became parts of the Ukrainian SSR. The city was rebuilt after the war encouraged by generous investments from the Soviet Union. The period of the most significant redevelopment of the city continued until the independence of Moldova in 1991.

Chişinău is the most economically prosperous locality in Moldova, and its largest transportation hub. its main industries include consumer and electrical goods, building materials, machinery, plastics, rubber, and textiles. The main service fields are banking and shopping/commerce. Air Moldova has its head office on the property of Chişinău International Airport. An international railway terminal exists with possible connections to Bucharest, Kiev, Minsk, Odessa, Moscow, Samara, Varna and Saint Petersburg.

As the most economically and socially important municipality in Moldova, the city has a broad range of educational facilities. The city is home to 12 public and 11 private universities, the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, as well as a number of institutions offering both high school education, as well as 1–2 years of college education.

Many modern-style buildings were built in the city since 1991. There are also a lot of office and shopping complexes that are modern, renovated or newly built; including Kentford, SkyTower, and Union Fenosa headquarters. However, the old Soviet-style clusters of living blocks are still an extensive feature of the cityscape. Some restored buildings of the 19th century add to the city architecture.

Most interesting Chisinau sights include National Archaeological & History Museum (archaeological artifacts, weaponry from the Soviet era and Golden Horde coins are on display); Parcul La Izvor, largest park in the city; The Triumph Arch, The Moldovan National Ballet & National Opera, 1903 Memorial, that commemorates the killing of Jews in the 1903, St. Teodora de la Sihla Church, Stephen the Great Monument and others.
